A New Kind of GTA Protagonist

For over two decades, Grand Theft Auto protagonists have followed a pattern: male, morally ambiguous, and driven by some combination of revenge, ambition, or survival. GTA 6 is breaking that mold in the most significant way possible — by putting a woman front and center for the first time in the mainline series.

Lucia isn’t just a milestone for representation. From everything we’ve seen, she’s shaping up to be one of the most compelling characters Rockstar has ever created. And alongside her partner Jason, GTA 6 is set to deliver a character-driven story that could rival — or surpass — what Rockstar achieved with Arthur Morgan in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Lucia, GTA 6's first female protagonist in the mainline series

Lucia: The Heart of GTA 6

Here’s what we know about Lucia based on official trailers and confirmed reporting:

Background: Lucia appears to be a Latina woman, likely of Cuban or Central American descent, which fits perfectly with Vice City’s cultural identity. Several scenes in the trailers suggest she has a history with the criminal justice system — we see what appears to be a prison or detention facility in her storyline. This would make her the first GTA protagonist whose story begins behind bars.

Personality: The trailer footage paints Lucia as sharp, resilient, and street-smart. She’s not the wide-eyed newcomer to crime that some GTA protagonists have been. She knows the game, she knows the risks, and she’s playing to win. There’s a hardness to her that suggests serious trauma in her past, but also moments of vulnerability that Rockstar clearly wants us to connect with.

Role in the story: Lucia appears to be an equal — or even dominant — partner in her relationship with Jason. She’s not a sidekick. She’s not a love interest who exists to motivate a male character. She’s a fully realized protagonist with her own arc, her own motivations, and her own agency.

Jason: The Wild Card

If Lucia is the calculated one, Jason is the powder keg. Here’s what the trailers and leaks tell us:

Background: Jason appears to be a local Floridian — think swamp-country roots mixed with big-city criminal ambitions. He gives off strong “Florida Man” energy, but in a way that Rockstar will likely play for both comedy and tragedy.

Personality: Impulsive, charismatic, and probably dangerous to be around. The trailers show Jason in moments of reckless aggression that contrast sharply with Lucia’s more measured approach. He’s the guy who escalates situations, the one who turns a clean getaway into a highway shootout because someone looked at him wrong.

Dynamic with Lucia: Their relationship is clearly the narrative engine of the game. Are they romantic partners? Criminal partners? Both? The trailers suggest a deep, complicated bond — two people who might be terrible for each other but can’t seem to break apart.

The Supporting Cast

Beyond the two leads, the trailers have given us glimpses of what looks like a rich ensemble cast. Here’s who we’ve spotted:

Cal — A character who appears in several trailer shots, seemingly connected to the criminal underworld. His exact role is unclear, but he gives off “mentor figure” or “dangerous ally” vibes.

Ambrosia — Not a character but a location: an iconic nightclub in Vice City, prominently featured in trailer footage. It appears to be a major social hub in the game.

Dre’Quan — Appears in what look like action sequences. Possibly a rival, possibly a crew member. The trailer doesn’t give enough context to pin down his allegiance.

Raul — Another character spotted in trailer footage, seemingly connected to the story’s criminal networks. Given Vice City’s cultural backdrop, Raul could be tied to cartel or organized crime storylines.

What’s Confirmed

  • Lucia and Jason are the dual protagonists — This is official, confirmed by Rockstar through the trailers
  • Lucia is the first female protagonist in a mainline GTA game
  • The Bonnie-and-Clyde dynamic is central to the narrative
  • Lucia has a connection to incarceration — Visible in trailer footage
  • Multiple supporting characters appear throughout the trailers
  • The story is set in Leonida (fictional Florida), centered on Vice City

What’s Still Speculation

  • Whether we can freely switch between Lucia and Jason like the three-protagonist system in GTA V, or whether the game assigns you a character for specific missions
  • The full extent of Lucia’s backstory — Is she an immigrant? An ex-convict? Both?
  • Jason’s ultimate fate — Rockstar loves a tragedy, and Jason’s reckless personality screams “doomed arc”
  • How the supporting cast factors in — Are Cal, Dre’Quan, and Raul major story players or secondary characters?
  • Voice actors — Rockstar hasn’t confirmed the cast, though the 2022 leak gave some hints

Why This Matters

GTA has always been defined by its protagonists. CJ, Niko Bellic, Trevor Phillips — these characters became cultural icons because Rockstar gave them depth, contradiction, and humanity beneath the carnage. Lucia and Jason have the potential to be the most layered GTA characters yet.

Rockstar has clearly learned from Red Dead Redemption 2, where Arthur Morgan’s emotional journey elevated the entire game. If they bring that same level of character writing to Lucia and Jason’s story — while maintaining GTA’s signature chaos and dark humor — we could be looking at something that transcends the open-world genre entirely.

The characters make the game. And from everything we’ve seen, GTA 6’s characters are going to be unforgettable.
