An internal email sent to Best Buy affiliates circulated this week, indicating that GTA 6 pre-orders would open from May 19, 2026. The information was picked up by GAMINGbible and IGN but has not been officially confirmed by Rockstar Games or Take-Two Interactive. On its own, a retailer leak is a thin signal. Placed against Rockstar’s marketing history, it carries considerably more weight.

What GTA 5 and RDR2 established as standard practice

Rockstar has never opened a pre-order window without pairing it with a major video release. The two most recent precedents are unambiguous:

GamePre-order openingAssociated trailerGap to release
GTA VAugust 6, 2013Trailer 3 (gameplay)~2 months before Sept. 17, 2013
Red Dead Redemption 2Fall 2017Trailer 3 (gameplay)~1 year before Oct. 26, 2018
GTA 6 (expected)Week of May 19, 2026?Trailer 3 (unannounced)~6 months before Nov. 19, 2026

In both documented cases, pre-order availability coincided with a trailer focused on gameplay or narrative, designed to justify an 80-dollar purchase. The commercial logic is straightforward: no one pre-orders a major release on the strength of a single promotional trailer that is now over a year old.

GTA 6’s Trailer 2 dropped on May 6, 2025, more than twelve months ago. The six-month gap between mid-May 2026 and the November 19 release date matches almost exactly the window between RDR2’s third trailer and its launch.

What the leak does and does not confirm

The Best Buy email establishes a pre-order date, not the existence of a trailer. It is an internal retailer document, a category that has previously preceded official announcements (several major release dates leaked through retailers before Take-Two issued formal communications). The source has not been independently verified at the time of writing.

What can be stated without speculation: Rockstar must open pre-orders at some point before November 2026, and six months out is entirely consistent with its track record. The trailer/pre-order pairing remains an inference, historically strong but unconfirmed.

Why Monday May 19 is circulating as a target date

Several high-traffic Reddit threads point toward a Monday in the week of May 18. Rockstar has a documented preference for early-week releases: Trailer 1 dropped on a Tuesday (December 5, 2023), Trailer 2 also on a Tuesday (May 6, 2025). A Monday or Tuesday in the week of May 19 would fit that pattern.

It is worth naming what this is: a convergence of signals (a retailer email, a historical precedent, a calendar alignment), not a confirmation. Rockstar has announced nothing. If the Best Buy leak proves accurate on the pre-order date, the probability of a simultaneous or near-simultaneous trailer becomes very high based on past behavior. If the date shifts, the underlying logic still holds, just on a different timeline.

The GTA 6 community has been waiting for this signal since December 2023. Whether or not the week of May 18 is the moment, the pre-order opening and Trailer 3 are the two certain next steps in the marketing cycle, in an order Rockstar has already followed twice.
