90 Seconds That Broke Every Record

On December 5, 2023, Rockstar Games released a 90-second trailer that cleared 90 million views in 24 hours, roughly the entire population of Germany watching the same video in a single day. No press release, no teaser: straight to the point. Years of speculation, dubious leaks, and Reddit theories, and Rockstar addressed nearly all of it in a minute and a half.

What follows is a frame-by-frame breakdown of everything worth noting.

Lucia: The Protagonist We’ve Waited 20 Years For

Lucia, female protagonist of GTA 6, in a trailer scene

The trailer opens on a dark shot. A prison. And there she is, Lucia Caminos, the first playable female protagonist in a mainline GTA game. In over two decades of the franchise, this is a genuine first. Her line, “The only way out of here is to keep going,” became one of the most quoted in the community within hours of the drop.

Rockstar placing Lucia front and center from the very first second is a deliberate signal: GTA 6 isn’t GTA V 2.0. The studio is opening a new chapter.

Vice City, But Not the One You Remember

The pixelated palm trees of 2002 and Tommy Vercetti’s synthwave soundtrack are long gone. GTA 6’s Vice City is modern Florida, in full: the fictional state of Leonida is unmistakable, and the scope is considerable.

  • Vice City: a skyline of skyscrapers that makes GTA V look quaint, vast beaches, art deco throughout
  • The Grassrivers: sprawling swamplands with alligators just casually present. A long way from Los Santos.
  • The Leonida Keys: tropical islands connected by bridges, pure Florida Keys geography

The setting is decisively contemporary. Characters film on smartphones, interfaces mirror Instagram’s layout, influencers appear mid-content. Rockstar isn’t just rebuilding Miami; they’re rebuilding the present era, with its absurdity intact.

6 Moments That Sent Forums Into Meltdown

The trailer has more than six notable beats, but these are the ones that dominated discussion:

  1. The prison scene, Lucia’s introduction. Dark, raw, immediately gripping. Her history feels heavy from the first frame.
  2. The Bonnie & Clyde moment, Lucia and Jason together, guns in hand, mid-heist. The criminal couple dynamic is hard to miss.
  3. The wildlife, Flamingos on beaches, alligators in swamps. Leonida’s ecosystem looks more organic than anything in previous Rockstar titles.
  4. The nightclub scenes, Neon lights, dense crowds, electric atmosphere. Vice City after dark looks like a priority.
  5. The car chase, A glimpse of driving physics that seem noticeably evolved from GTA V. Vehicles carry weight and inertia.
  6. The final aerial shot of Vice City, A dizzying view revealing the city’s scale, and that’s probably a fraction of the full map.

Easter Eggs: What the Community Uncovered

The community spent months dissecting every pixel, and the findings are worth noting:

  • References to GTA Vice City (2002): certain buildings are near-identical recreations of iconic locations from the original. The Malibu Club appears visible in the background of one scene.
  • The Roman numeral VI hidden throughout: on license plates, road signs, in architecture. A recurring Rockstar signature.
  • Florida Man: a TV news ticker directly references the legendary internet meme, weaving internet culture into the fiction.

What’s Confirmed

  • Lucia as a playable female protagonist, a franchise first
  • Vice City / Leonida as the setting, in a modern-day timeline
  • A dual-protagonist structure with Lucia and Jason
  • Art deco architecture blended with a contemporary skyline
  • A living world with wildlife and dense NPC populations

What’s Still Speculation

Despite the trailer’s generosity, significant questions remain. No gameplay footage appeared. Nothing about actual map size. The exact story timeline is unclear, and several characters appear briefly with no indication of their role.

That approach has precedent: Rockstar used the same calculated restraint with the Red Dead Redemption 2 trailers, releasing just enough to sustain months of theorizing while keeping the essentials off the table.

The Impact: Before and After Trailer 1

Trailer 1 confirmed Rockstar’s modern artistic direction, introduced Lucia as an already recognizable character, and established that GTA 6 is positioning itself as more than an incremental update. The bar is set high. Based on Rockstar’s track record with GTA V and RDR2, that was almost certainly the intent from the start.
